Job Application and Selection Process
Applications are accepted only for positions currently on open recruitment to the public. Once the application is received, your application will be reviewed and you will be notified by mail as to whether you meet the minimum qualification requirements for the job; date and location in Hawai`i to report for a written and/or performance examination, if required; and test results.
If you pass the examination, your name is placed on the eligible list in accordance with your test score. Eligible lists are good for a period of one year, and any vacancies arising during the course of the year may be filled through these lists. Even if you dont initially score high in the examination, your name may be reached as time passes when higher scoring individuals are hired, decline a job, or find other employment.
Based on test scores and an individuals availability, names are referred to the department that has the vacancy. The department/agency contacts these individuals, schedules and conducts job interviews. We do not disclose your examination score to the hiring department/agency. Persons referred for a vacancy by our department then compete equally with each other. The hiring department/agency contacts these individuals, schedules and conducts job interviews here on our island. The department may select anyone of those referred and interviewed, and will notify each person interviewed of their selection decision.
For those recruitments which are registration and no examination is conducted, the Department of Human Resources will refer applicants names in alphabetical order and the department interviewing for the vacancy will receive the entire list of names.
Persons selected will need to take a pre-entry medical examination with one of our County Physicians to be cleared for work. Cost for the pre-entry medical examination is paid for by the County.
